Romina de Novellis is a young performance artist that had a dream come true for her project GRADIVA thanks to Pompeii Archeological Park with the help of Anna Fresa, D.A.F.NA (Naples), Danilo Ambrosino. She was granted the permission to perform from sunset to sunrise all over Pompeii Archeological Park, an unprecedented event except only in 1972 when Pink Floyd was granted permission only for the ancient Roman Amphitheater. GRADIVA – the woman who walks – is a novel by Wilhelm Jensen. It was inspired by a Roman bas-relief of the same name and became the basis for Sigmund Freud’s famous 1907 study Delusion and Dream in Jensen’s Gradiva.

The film, which was shot on location from sunset to sunrise, shows Romina de Novellis dragging her body around on a cart, the cast of which was produced at Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli to look like the bodies that were found in Pompeii after the 79 AD eruption of Vesuvius. The video begins with a famous Neapolitan song Maruzella sung by the artist’s grandmother at the end of her life. GRADIVA begins with the ruins of Pompeii and the sounds of traffic and those of street vendors in modern day Naples, in allegory to the Pompeii that once existed, a very busy ancient Roman city.

We are seeking to present GRADIVA to curators , institutions and foundations and art Galleries that would be interested in showing this work and to highlight the unprecedented filming opportunity afforded the artist by Pompeii Archeological Park.
