American artist Laurie Simmons’ third solo exhibition, ‘2017: The Mess and Some New,’ has just opened at Salon 94 Bowery. In this show, plastic takes center stage, becoming the subject of a new monumental photograph—a portrait or momento mori of our times. The show runs through June 2, 2018.
From the CUNY TV Digital Series:
In this episode of Twilight Talks, Kevin Moore interviews Laurie Simmons, an American artist, photographer, and filmmaker. Since the 1970s, Simmons has staged scenes with dolls, ventriloquist dummies, “walking objects,” and live models, creating photographs that resemble enigmatic domestic scenes.
Laurie is part of The Pictures Generation, a name given to a group of artists from a 2009 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art that also featured Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, and Louise Lawler. Her feature film, My Art, which she wrote and starred in, premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival.
