“I don’t want my work to feel like a needle jumping on a broken vinyl, even though the vinyl must contain the most gorgeous music you have ever heard. I’d rather throw away what I have achieved and try something else” —Frank Thiel
Frank Thiel’s exhibition, Quinceañeras is up at Blain|Southern Berlin through June 23, 2018.
From BlainSouthern:
The artist explains his work in the context of his long-standing preoccupation with places undergoing transformation; from post-reunification Berlin to the glaciers of Patagonia, and now Cuba. For Thiel, his portraits of young Cuban women celebrating ‘los quinces’ – their transition into adulthood – act as a metaphor for the shifting identity of the unique island.
