“I make work that explores my life as a cosmopolitan Nigerian woman who lives in the United States right now, and straddles both cultures.” —Njideka Akunyili Crosby
Continuing our Venice Biennale-related content, artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby (b. 1983, Nigeria; lives and works in Los Angeles) makes collaged paintings with a highly distinctive visual signature that draws inspiration from memories and images of her Nigerian childhood layered with her current life in the United States. At the 2019 Venice Biennale, the work of Akunyili Crosby is featured in the primary exhibition at the Arsenale, curator Ralph Rugoff’s May You Live in Interesting Times (through November 24, 2019). Additionally, Victoria Miro’s Venice location will be featuring a solo exhibition of Akunyili Crosby’s acclaimed The Beautyful Ones series (through July 13, 2019). Amongst her many recent accolades, in 2017 Akunyili Crosby was awarded a “Genius Grant” by the MacArthur Foundation, who visited with her in her studio for this video.
