“I want people to stand there. I want people to stare at the paintings – see what I did as a painter. So when I started the Fuck Paintings [in 1969], it seemed to me that I was just fulfilling my own ambition – to do that.” —Betty Tompkins

Congratulations to the inimitable artist Betty Tompkins on being among the 10 recipients of the 2018 Anonymous Was a Woman award! As luck would have it, you can also still catch her knockout solo show, Will She Ever Shut Up? at P.P.O.W Gallery in Chelsea until December 22, 2018. In this 2012 video from the MOMMY Blog (by artists Susan Silas and Chrysanne Stathacos) of women artist interviews, Tompkins talks about the background of when she first started her infamous Fuck Paintings, and how she finally came to have the first show of the paintings in 2002 with Mitchell Algus Gallery.
