“I don’t really have a plan before I start a drawing specifically. I sort-of go along from a tiny start, and it turns into whatever it turns into.” —Keith Haring

Keith Haring would have turned 61 today. Born on May 4, 1958, and one of the most iconic street artists of all time, Haring died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990. In 1983, he was just becoming more widely know when the founding director of the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin invited Haring to paint a mural on the construction fence around the site of the new museum. The conserved fence is now a foundational element of the Haggerty’s collection, and in recent years they have produced a number of short films and exhibitions on the project. In this video from the Haggerty, Haring talks about the project and about his art as he paints.

Stay tuned tomorrow for another video from Haring’s visit to Milwaukee!
