“The imagery of the tree comes from sort of a suburban ideal landscape because it is part of the history of Montclair. Montclair to me, seemed much about a place of both nature and culture. I think there is a sense of community that Montclair is very proud of. And I thought that presenting a project in which nature and culture coexist hand in hand would be a good reflection of the community, and the kind of treasured objects and legacies that they seem to revel in.” —Jean Shin
The exhibition, Jean Shin: Collections, is open at the Philadelphia Art Museum through July 15, 2018. Shin transforms everyday objects—worn-out shoes, fashion remnants, military uniforms—to create dynamic works about connection and belonging. On the occasion of her exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Museum, we take a look behind the scenes at her 2013 installation at the Montclair Museum of Art, Host, and how her practice is built upon incorporating lost objects.
