“I felt quite uncomfortable with words – I wasn’t sure I could use them well at all. I was pretty bad at French already. I think misunderstanding makes you use your imagination more.” —Laure Prouvost
Today we are inaugurating our look at the 2019 Venice Biennale with multimedia artist Laure Prouvost (b. 1978, France; currently living and working in Belgium), who is representing France. Educated in London at Goldsmiths, and with a degree in Film from Central Saint Martins, Prouvost’s work engages the viewer in often-surreal environments based on scenarios both real and imagined. In 2013, Prouvost won the prestigious Turner Prize for her film and installation work Wantee (2013). Tate visited with her in her London studio to discuss filmmaking and what drives her creative process.
