“My idea of color, for me, is real gutty and acid.” —David Smith
In this rare televised interview from 1964, the AbEx sculptor and painter David Smith dives into his practice and the pleasure he takes in creating difficult colors. “I like the color to produce a challenge,” he says, cigar in hand. Back in 2011, LACMA put on Cubes and Anarchy, the first major retrospective of Smith’s work, where an accompanying essay referred to Smith as “The Man of Steel.”
