“The empowerment of public space was very, very important in providing a communal space for social interaction.” —Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design, MoMA
As a great timely example for this Labor Day here in North America, we thought we’d include a piece from the Museum of Modern Art in New York—whose union just recently reached a contract agreement with the museum’s management.
Today’s video highlights a fascinating exhibition titled Toward a Concrete Utopia currently on view at MoMA. The exhibition explores not only Yugoslav architecture from 1948-1980, but theories of consumerism, urbanization, architectural construction, and technology of the time. Distinct in its form and function, Yugoslav architecture from this period presents a particular vision of idealism, east versus west hybridization, and socialist progress.
