Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s film, Never Look Away (2018) is either – depending on whom you ask, apparently – very closely or very loosely based on the life of legendary German painter Gerhard Richter. After initially meeting with von Donnersmarck, the notoriously private artist later distanced himself from the film. Recently, film critic Ann Lewinson published a scathing review of Never Look Away in Artnews (“Film Inspired by Gerhard Richter’s Life, Is a Smug Melodrama”), on the same day it was announced as a nominee for an Academy Award for best foreign language film. What intrigue! We might see it just for the fake Joseph Beuys. Here’s the trailer from Sony Pictures Classics.
