“What I do right now? I really don’t make any gestures that I instigate. I respond to situations the way I’m responding to a question.” —Robert Irwin
Robert Irwin is the real deal. The grandfather of the California Light and Space movement, and installation pioneer has been an intellectual guiding light in post-war American art for nearly half a century. Putting the minimal into Minimal art, Irwin’s art explores the very nature of perception in space, by the most subtle, yet often sublime, interventions. This video from Los Angeles County Museum of Art is a bit raw, but it packs a wallop as Clare Sparks questions Irwin on his work, and he is at once candid and opaque, but always charming – like much of his artistic output. Sit down and pay attention – you’ll learn something.
