“No no no! These are not memories. This is all real, what you see. Every image, every detail, everything is real.” —Jonas Mekas
So much has been said already about the recent passing of Jonas Mekas (December 24, 1922 – January 23, 2019), godfather of avant-garde cinema, and all-around wonderful human being, that we do not really have anything to add. However, Mekas was keenly aware of his own mortality and was generous enough to share with the world some of what he had learned. On the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2012, he created something of his own retrospective, with the release of Outtakes from the Life of a Happy Man, to coincide with exhibitions at the Serpentine and a film retrospective at the BFI Southbank in London, and an exhibition at the Pompidou in Paris. So we are going to stretch a bit outside of our usual art video rather video art parameters to share with you this clip from Outtakes, released by Nowness.
