“It’s very symbolic to put something on ‘the hat,’ let’s say, atop of all we have achieved in the last thousand and thousands of years.” —Alicja Kwade
With summer in the city almost officially upon us, you likely see a number of rooftops on the horizon. You can count among them the Met’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, now featuring new sculptural work by Berlin-based artist Alicja Kwade.
ParaPivot, Kwade’s first solo exhibition at a museum in the United States, calls to mind the celestial bodies hurtling through our galaxy, like a mini mapped-out solar system hovering above Central Park. Made from stone sourced from all over the world, the orbs may have less gravitational pull than their planetary cousins, but they’re nevertheless quite the summer attraction.
