This week, all eyes will be on the grand opening of Pace Gallery’s new eight-story, 75,000 square foot, $100M headquarters on West 25th Street in Chelsea. Among the exhibitions inaugurating the building will be Calder: Small Sphere and Heavy Sphere leading off in the new gallery’s ground floor space (through October 26, 2019), “a major exhibition tracing the breadth of Alexander Calder’s innovative practice, leading up to his conception of the mobile in 1931.”
In 1967, Calder (b. 1898, Lawnton, PA; d. 1976, New York City) was commissioned to create the monumental stabile Man/L’Homme/Trois Disques (1967) for the International Expo in Montreal, Canada. This award-winning short documentary by Douglas Rothacker, Jr. traces the design and creation of the work.
