“Through humanity, we want – at least I do – a more harmonious world, where we are not hit every day with problems we can avoid.” —Louise Nevelson
It would be hard to overstate the impact of Louise Nevelson and in particular the importance of her early career in the 1940s and 1950s in New York. She was born on September 23, 1899 in Kiev, and died in New York City on April 17, 1988. This summer marked the beginning of a campaign to restore her landmark Nevelson Chapel in New York. In this wide-ranging and candid interview with Barbaralee Diamonstein for her show Inside New York’s Art World in 1977, Nevelson discusses her career, beliefs, life, and sings the praises of New York City. Our friends at Artnews also recently published this interview with Diamonstein in 1974.
