“We tend to think of architecture, and infrastructure as permanent, but Detroit challenges that assumption. So much seems to be missing. But the people of Detroit are actively demonstrating what’s still there, and asking important questions about what should stay, what should go, and what kinds of spaces will bring the people and resources already present in this great city into collaboration, and collision, and conversation.” —Sarah Green
Detroit has certainly gotten its fair share of attention lately, from the close call at the Detroit Institute of Arts to its more recent investments. Yet for all the attention paid [and yes, Detroit does hold a special place in our hearts –ed.], it is also often misunderstood by those outside of the Detroit art community. It’s not all ‘ruin porn’ and ‘revival’ – the Detroit art community has been here all along. So we were excited to see that the Art Assignment with Sarah Green made Detroit the latest addition to its ‘Art Trip’ series, with an outstanding overview of the Detroit art scene, from the august DIA to grassroots community organizers, and everything in between. Enjoy the trip!
