MARKET: Mia Pearlman’s Inspiration for “The Flying Tidings Whirled”
MGM Resorts Art & Culture
07.27.2018“I started thinking about the artwork that I love and that influences me so much, and most of it is made by super badass women, sculptors, who are now in their 60s, 70s, 80s.” —Mia Pearlman
Brooklyn-based artist Mia Pearlman was commissioned to create The Flying Tidings Whirled, a large-scale, site-specific installation made of powder-coated, waterjet-cut aluminum for the MGM Springfield, MGM’s newest property, slated to open next month in Springfield, Massachusetts. The resort’s art collection will showcase local and regional artists from the city, the greater Berkshires area, and New England, while also reflecting the national and international breadth of the MGM Resorts Fine Art Collection. In this video, which recently debuted as part of a series of short-form documentaries in the MGM Resorts Lounge at Art Basel, Pearlman shares what attracted her to the project and how she approaches the challenge of creating public art.
