“I spent a lot of time there, and I really did feel her presence, because all of her objects are there, and people are sort-of present in the things that they choose to have around them during their life.” —Hayden Herrera, Frida Kahlo biographer
Opening this week at the Brooklyn Museum is Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving, open through May 12, 2019. Building off of related exhibitions at the Museo Frida Kahlo in Mexico City, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the exhibition is a unique look at Frida Kahlo‘s life not just through her artwork, but also her possessions and collections such as clothing, jewelry, souvenirs, photographs, artifacts, and other ephemera.
In 2016, Christie’s spoke with Kahlo’s biographer Hayden Herrera about the importance of La Casa Azul and its objects in understanding Kahlo – her life, her art, and even her anguish. In this video, we hear from Herrera and tour the house and its objects, many of which make up this new exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum.
