“Looking back to my old drawings when I was a kid, seeing that they kind-of look like hallucinations and dreams, the question was, Why do I see these things? Why does it create these places, these moods, the world upside down all the time?” —Ali Banisadr
Iranian-born, Brooklyn-based painter Ali Banisadr recently opened his first solo exhibition in Germany, The World Upside Down at Blain|Southern Berlin, through November 17, 2018. With three museum exhibitions and the publication of a new monograph coming up in 2019, Banisadr continues to prove himself a formidable painter to follow. In this video, the artist discusses how as a child he used drawing to process the tumultuous world around him, the importance of his studio time, and how sound has become a touchstone in his more recent practice.
