“The Night Watch is one of the most famous paintings in the world. It belongs to us all, and that is why we have decided to conduct the restoration within the museum itself – and everyone, wherever they are, will be able to follow the process online.” —Taco Dibbits, General Director, Rijksmuseum
2019 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn, and the Dutch are pretty excited, mounting exhibitions and events around the Netherlands throughout the year. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is pulling out all the stops, with multiple exhibitions and events. First up is the appropriately-titled exhibition All the Rembrandts – a display of all 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and 300 best examples of prints in the Rijksmuseum’s collection, from February 15, 2019, through June 10, 2019. But perhaps more daunting is what will then start in July 2019: the comprehensive restoration of Rembrandt’s 1642 masterpiece The Night Watch in full public view – its first restoration in over 40 years, since the painting was attacked by a religious zealot with a bread knife in 1975. In this video, we hear Taco Dibbits discuss the project.
