“A lot of people feel like art and politics should be separated. I really think that the two cannot be extricated from the other. Over the years, art has always been the point of entry into our reading of history.” —Shireen Gandhy
Can you believe it’s time for another art fair? It seems like just yesterday that Art Basel bought Art Hong Kong to create Art Basel in Hong Kong, the third stop in its global juggernaut of art commerce. But that was 2013. However, it was in fact just a couple of days ago that TEFAF Maastricht closed. Everybody on the plane!
When Kekoo and Khorshed Gandhy founded Chemould Gallery in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1963, they probably could not have imagined where their passion for the art of their time would take them today. Now under the discerning guidance of their daughter Shireen Gandhy, Chemould Prescott Road is one of the oldest and most influential commercial galleries in India, having championed the careers of such notable Indian artists ranging from Indian modernists like M. F. Husain and S. H. Raza to contemporary stars like Jitish Kallat and Shilpa Gupta. In this video from Art Basel’s Meet the Gallerists series, Shireen Gandhy speaks about the history of the gallery, what she has learned from working with artists, and their role in understanding history.
