“From a cultural, political level, I’m interested in a tree having that identity of something that has a rightful place and belonging, but also being despised, and not wanted.” —Hugh Hayden
Dallas-born and New York-residing artist Hugh Hayden has been on a well-deserved roll lately, most recently with a solo exhibition at Lisson Gallery’s 10th Avenue space in Chelsea. As described by Lisson, in this video “Hugh Hayden discusses the processes and ideas of assimilation, immigration, and gentrification behind his first exhibition with Lisson Gallery. Entitled ‘Border States,’ he reveals how the raw materials were chosen and then brought into the studio before undergoing various transformations into works.”
