“And [the fabricator] was concerned from a practical point of view that the works might be dangerous, that they don’t stand up by themselves. So I put these tags on the piece that say ‘Take note, this structure will not stand on its own.’ Which is literally true, but also true of what the work is about.” —Jessica Stockholder
The work of Jessica Stockholder (b. 1959) explores juxtapositions of colors and forms, found and created materials, reliance and independence, chaos and order, all with a pervasive sense of whimsy and humor. Stepping now into the bit of well-managed chaos that is Armory Week in New York, Stockholder has been tapped by curator, and newly-appointed Executive Director of Queens Museum, Sally Tallant to participate in the Platform section of the Armory Show (March 6-10, 2019), dedicated to large-scale special installations.
On the occasion of her 2015 exhibition Door Hinges at Kavi Gupta in Chicago (where Stockholder lives and is Chair of the Department of Visual Art at the University of Chicago), the gallery released this walk-through of the exhibition with the artist.
