“I don’t know if I was ready to put my body out that way when I started. But by the time I’d committed, the commitment had begun – it was too late. And then you find out how to figure that out later. And I really like that.” —Shona McAndrew

If there is a clear theme in this year’s slate of fall gallery openings in New York, it’s that Tribeca has become a new center of gravity, with more new and established galleries opening in the neighborhood. A new gallery from a highly accomplished dealer is CHART, opened last spring by Clara Ha. At CHART this fall is the first New York solo show by the sensational young artist Shona McAndrew. For the exhibition MUSE, curated by Maria Brito, the artist has created nine new paintings and five new sculptures “based on the idea of women as muses and owning their surroundings physically, mentally and emotionally.” The exhibition runs through November 2, 2019.

Last summer, McAndrew and Brito sat down for Cultured Magazine for a conversation about women’s image and empowerment, and how McAndrew finds inspiration and confidence.
