“The first Soundsuit happened in 1992. It was in response to the Rodney King incident, which is sort of connected to the LA riots, and so that was really sort of what got this body of work off the ground. Prior to that, I was doing really large constructive paintings. You know, it’s amazing how something so profound can sort of literally sort of shift your direction of thinking and making.”—Nick Cave

Nick Cave’s new exhibition, Weather or Not, now on view at the Jack Shainman Gallery, will debut a series of wire Tondos. The bright, circular wall weavings are created from the layered mapping of cataclysmic weather patterns superimposed onto brain scans of black youth suffering from PTSD as a result of gun violence. The exhibition will be up from May 17 through June 23, 2018. Here’s a look back at the creation of his Soundsuits.

From ICA Boston:

Artist Nick Cave spent several days installing his solo exhibition at the ICA Boston in February. While he was here, we asked him about the evolution of his newest works, the surprising inspiration behind his legendary Soundsuits, and what it feels like to put one on.
