“He broke the mold and the tyranny that minimalism had on abstraction. He showed that there were other ways of moving forward, or of a form of disciplined constructivism. That it wasn’t just for the mind, it was for the senses.” —David McKee, Founder, McKee Gallery
Pioneering abstract artist Harvey Quaytman is featured in a rare retrospective at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives. Harvey Quaytman: Against the Static (through January 27, 2019) charts the painter’s career from the 1960s through the 1990s, showcasing abstract experiments in form, texture, and color that are both formally rigorous and rich with sensuality and humor. In this great, short documentary, family, friends, and contemporary artists share insights into Quaytman’s life, process, and continued influence.
We would be remiss if we did not mention that BMPFA is also currently hosting the truly outstanding Peter Hujar: Speed of Life exhibition (through November 18, 2018) that was at the Morgan Library earlier this year. See the preview of that exhibition here.
