“Of course there is art that deals with all the inequality and problems – which I appreciate a lot – but for me, I decided not to use my force to tell what’s wrong, but sucking out the possible pleasures of daily life and our extremely complex body – it’s just what I want to give back.” —Pipilotti Rist
Pipilotti Rist (b. 1962, Switzerland) is one of the most influential video artists of her generation, whose inspiration is the gift that keeps on giving, reaching far beyond the confines of the art world, from Times Square to Beyoncé music videos. She famously described her video installations as being like a woman’s handbag, with “room in them for everything: painting, technology, language, music, lousy flowing pictures, poetry, commotion, premonitions of death, sex and friendliness.”
Rist is now featured in a solo museum exhibition at the Louisiana Museum in Denmark, Open My Glade, open through June 23, 2019, and has been featured a number of times on the museum’s great Louisiana Channel. In 2017 she got the Brilliant Ideas treatment from Bloomberg, who produced this deep dive into Rist’s life and career, with visits to exhibitions, and a tour of her incredible studio.
