On October 7, 2012, a vandal defaced Mark Rothko’s Black on Maroon (1958), one of an extraordinary series of nine paintings by Rothko – originally commissioned as a series of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York – on permanent display in a purpose-built room at the Tate Modern. Apparently watching art conservators in action is a thing now, and we can certainly get behind that, watching these miracle workers ply their trade across a spectrum of fine art, science, and magic. As fascinating and compelling as the best police procedural, this video takes us through the incredible 18-month process of restoring the work.
