“[T]here’s certain subway stations where the walls are just trashed with shit that’s evidence of life lived. I love that language. The work accepts the abundance of history, as opposed to being scared of it.” —Cameron Welch
At its New York headquarters, Phillips is staging the second iteration of its exhibition (first held at Phillips in London in 2017) AMERICAN AFRICAN AMERICAN. Curated by the always great Arnold Lehman (Senior Advisor, Phillips; Director Emeritus, Brooklyn Museum), the exhibition “offers an inclusive and dynamic reshuffling of the American art world order,” and “looks towards the increasingly powerful signature of a growing number of American artists who happen to be black, as well as those who look deeply into their blackness or black culture to create exceptional works of art.” With works from over 60 artists ranging from the iconic (Jean-Michel Basquiat, Romare Bearden) to the emerging (Tomashi Jackson, Cameron Welch), covering the 1950s to today, the exhibition runs until February 8, 2019, at Phillips’ 450 Park Avenue headquarters. In this video, Phillips visits great young mosaic artist Cameron Welch in his Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio.
