“Our task here is to give artists the opportunity to experiment, take risks, to make leaps in their practice that wouldn’t be possible in another setting.” —Elena Filipovic
Perhaps a lot of people think of Kunsthalle Basel as “that place next to the Campari Bar,” but it is in fact perhaps the most storied contemporary art venue in Basel, if not all of Switzerland. In its 150–year history, it has hosted seminal shows by artists as diverse as Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, to Cindy Sherman and Mike Kelley. Currently on view are exhibitions featuring crazy robots by Geumhyung Jeong (don’t miss the performances!) and Dora Budor (she of Leo DiCaprio character look-alikes wandering around Frieze New York 2017), so it is sure to remain a must see venue during Art Basel. Save us a seat at the bar!
Continuing its Meet the Institution series, Art Basel visited with Elena Filipovic, Director and Curator at Kunsthalle Basel, and took a look around.
