“Everything Yves Klein did had been intense. Aesthetically speaking, he was really doing something different. But that was Yves Klein. He was possessed. He really showed to people the immaterial.” —Daniel Moquay
Yves Klein was born in Nice, France on April 28, 1928, and died in Paris, France on June 6, 1962, at the tender age of 34. He only started focusing on producing art in 1954, and as soon as 1955 began his legendary monochrome paintings, leading to the registration of International Klein Blue in 1960. In his brief but incandescent career, “I feel that he probably achieved everything he wanted to achieve” says Daniel Moquay, manager of Klein’s estate, and husband of his widow, artist Rotraut Uecker.
In 2018, as part of the celebrations for what would have been Klein’s 90th birthday, Christie’s sat down with Moquay to discuss Klein’s life and impact, and produced this video which also includes rare footage and photos of Klein and his work.
