“For Warhol in the late ‘50s, trying to enter into an art world that was full of hard-drinking, tough dudes who were making big oil paintings, to be an out, gay man was absolutely against the grain and the expectations of everything a male, American artist was meant to be.” —T. J. Wilcox
The Whitney’s landmark Andy Warhol retrospective, Andy Warhol – From A to B and Back Again is in its last month, closing March 31, 2019. So today we wrap up our Warhol-mania with the third installment in their WarholxWhitney series, Andy Warhol: Ways of Being. Produced by friends of Daily Plinth, SandenWolff Productions, the series has traced three critical aspects of Warhol as an artist: his cultural impact (Andy Warhol: The Culture of Now), his artistic output (Andy Warhol: Ways of Making), and now at his personal life as a young gay artist and child of Eastern European immigrants, making a name for himself in New York.
The all-star cast of this final episode includes such luminaries as writer and podcast host Aminatou Sow; talk show host and reality TV producer Andy Cohen; artists T. J. Wilcox, Deborah Kass, Peter Halley, and Jeff Koons; curators Donna De Salvo and Jessica Beck; Warhol’s nephew James Warhola; and artist and fashion designer Virgil Abloh.
