“The great pleasure of going into storage was that it was to be about looking. It was a joy to be able to go peer and have an immediate response from the eyes.” —Jenny Holzer
With so many blockbusters opening this month in New York, it can be easy to miss some of the great exhibitions that are ongoing. One such exhibition that delighted us over the summer with revelations at every turn is Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection, now open at the Guggenheim Museum through January 12, 2020. For this exhibition, Artistic Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator Nancy Spector invited artists Cai Guo-Qiang, Paul Chan, Jenny Holzer, Julie Mehretu, Richard Prince, and Carrie Mae Weems to each curate their own exhibitions pulled from the Guggenheim’s permanent collection.
In this video from the Guggenheim, Spector and each of the artists describe the ideas that informed the exhibition.
