Are you headed to Basel? If so, you really should stop off in Amsterdam to visit All the Rembrandts at the Rijksmuseum, if you haven’t already done so. Closing on June 10, All the Rembrandts marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death by trotting out – in case this isn’t self-explanatory enough – all of the Rembrandts in the Rijksmuseum’s extraordinary collection. To be specific, the exhibition includes 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and more than 300 of the best examples of his prints.
And while you are there, you can check out another awe-inspiring work in the Rijksmuseum’s collection, the enormous painting The Battle of Waterloo (1824) by Jan Willem Pieneman, which clocks in at over 18 feet by 26 feet – the largest painting in the collection. It will certainly come as no surprise that cleaning a work like this is a bit complicated, although some of the processes and tools may surprise you. This video takes you behind-the-scenes with the conservators that get the job done.
We’d also like to take a moment to draw attention to how fantastic the Rijksmuseum’s website is, with a creative variety of ways to sort, learn more, and discover new works, and even to make copies and prints from select works in the collection. Take a moment to enjoy the page for The Battle of Waterloo, after you watch this video.
