“What kind of ventriloquism is at work in the Frick?” — Edmund de Waal
On the occasion of his new exhibition, Elective Affinities, up through November, ceramicist and author Edmund de Waal romantically recalls his first time at The Frick Collection—the beginning of his self-described “love affair” with the museum—and the reasons why he keeps returning. For this show, curated by Charlotte Vignon, Curator of Decorative Arts, de Waal’s site-specific works made of porcelain, steel, gold, marble and glass are on display in a kind of conversation with works from the permanent collection. Volume up to hear the wind chime–like sounds emanating from his porcelain pieces as he delightfully plays them like a xylophone.
