MUSEUMS: Elliott Hundley Resists His Authority
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
05.20.2019“I’m always looking for ways to resist my authority over the picture. I incorporate a lot of things that are ruined… I’m basically trying to resuscitate dead images.” —Elliott Hundley
Elliott Hundley (b. 1975, Greensboro, NC) is a multimedia artist living and working in Los Angeles with a strong slate of exhibitions to his name, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Louisiana Museum in Denmark, the New Museum, and the Guggenheim, where is was also recently awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. MOCA LA is now joining the ranks of museums that have – in a variety of permutations – turned to artists to curate exhibitions drawn from new works and their permanent collections. The first of these exhibitions, Open House: Elliott Hundley opened this spring and runs through September 16, 2019. For the exhibition, Hundley “will explore the architecture and origins of collage, exploring how the visual and material logic of this technique has informed artists in MOCA’s collection, as well as his own practice.”
In this video, MOCA visits Hundley in his studio for a behind-the-scenes look and to hear about his working process.
