“One thing that’s quite important is that we are actually making a painting. It’s not about going completely barmy with eggs.” —Sarah Lucas
Speaking of painting… Sarah Lucas (b. 1962, Holloway, UK) is currently the subject of an outstanding retrospective, Sarah Lucas: Au Naturel, now on view at the Hammer Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles (through September 1, 2019). The critically-lauded exhibition is curated by Massimiliano Gioni and first appeared at the New Museum in New York. A highlight of the exhibition in both locations is the creation of the “painting” One Thousand Eggs: For Women (2018-2019), wherein “women, those who identify as women, and men dressed as women or phalluses” throw 1,000 raw eggs at a wall. Fortunately for those of us who missed the performative installations, the Hammer created this video capturing the spirit of the event.
