STUDIOS: Can Lisa Anne Auerbach Divine the Future of Art?
Whitney Museum of American Art
01.30.2019“I think she just said ‘Pluto is my planet,’ and I was like, ‘It’s not even a planet anymore!’ What does that mean that the planet that’s a non-planet is my planet? It just seems sort-of sad.” —Lisa Anne Auerbach
The first edition of Frieze Los Angeles is going to be here soon (February 15-17, 2019). Frieze fairs are always distinguished by their outstanding programming, which for this edition will be curated by Ali Subotnick, formerly of LA’s Hammer Museum. One project that has especially piqued our curiosity is the Psychic Art Advisor (2019) project by Los Angeles-based artist Lisa Anne Auerbach. Auerbach’s participation in the 2014 Whitney Biennial also centered around her interest in psychics and other New Age-y themes, and in this video from the Whitney, Auerbach shows us around her studio and discusses her works for that exhibitions. For Frieze LA, Auerbach pivots to a more commercial orientation, combining art advisor and psychic advisor into one. Who will be the next big artist? Maybe Auerbach’s psychic art advisor will be able to tell you.
