“That’s one of the big problems that art confronts right now – and, quite probably, we all confront – is that the virtual denies tactility. It denies your physical presence in relationship to something other than a lighted screen.” —Richard Serra

Speaking of blockbusters, one of the most-watched openings this season will surely be Richard Serra’s (b. 1938, San Francisco) takeover of three of Gagosian’s New York outlets for his latest series of exhibitions. In addition to drawings on Madison Avenue, the finally-realized arc-sculpture Reverse Curve (2005) on 21st Street, and the monumental Rounds series on 24th Street, Serra has also recently received the New York Times profile treatment.

In 2015, on the occasion of its purchase of Serra’s Equal series, the Museum of Modern Art sat down with the artist to discuss the process of creating his monumental works and the importance of art engaging all of the senses.
