“I used to think of my work as auto-ethnographic, but there’s moments where you have to explore fiction and narrative, in order to connect the dots, when there’s been so much left out of the archive. I felt again that this was the point of view, the self-determinate actions of black women across decades and across the diaspora.” —Simone Leigh
Simone Leigh (b. 1968, Chicago, IL) was the celebrated 2018 winner of the Hugo Boss Prize. The resultant award exhibition, Loophole of Retreat (through October 27, 2019) is now on view at the Guggenheim in New York. The critically-praised show, combining text, a new suite of sculptures, and a curated film program, continues Leigh’s overarching career exploration of the black female experience, while expanding her language of new sculptural forms.
In this video, the Guggenheim takes us behind the scenes as Leigh creates new sculptures for the exhibition, and talks with her about the evolution of her artistic practice as she puts the finishing touches on the installation.
