STUDIOS: Swoon’s Konbit Shelter – Art in the Streets

The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles

“The thing is when you’re working alone in your studio, it’s an amazing process and you learn so much about who you are and you get into this really intense thought process but it can be very isolating and alienating in a way as well and there can be a way of feeling that that work starts to lack a connection to life as it’s lived.” —Caledonia Curry “Swoon”

Swoon is currently part of BEYOND THE STREETS in Los Angeles, through July 6, 2018.

From BTS:

BTS is the premier exhibition of graffiti, street art and beyond, celebrating the soaring heights to which the world’s most recognizable modern art movement has risen. BTS is a groundbreaking multimedia showcase of paintings, sculpture, photography, installations and more throughout 40,000+ sq ft of industrial indoor and outdoor space.

From MOCAtv:

Caledonia Curry “Swoon” talks about the transformation from street/studio artist to the raft voyages of, “Swimming Cities of Serenissima” and “Konbit Shelter” in Bigones-Leogane, Haiti. “Konbit Shelter” was inspired by the work of architect Nader Khalili and includes a community center to hold workshops, house the works of local stone carvers, and educate the village in the techniques of earth bag building. The project continues with the building of new homes for the residents of Bigones
