“Skill? I used to call it the highway to the unconscious. That’s where I like to be. In that place where you’re open, your mind goes quiet, and before long, all kinds of stuff, all kinds of possibilities come.” —Ken Price
Sculptor Kenneth Price was born on February 16, 1935, and passed away on February 24, 2012. Known for his innovative fired clay sculptures in sensual and evocative organic forms, Price was born and raised in Southern California, landing his first exhibition at the legendary Ferus Gallery in 1960. Price then moved to Taos, New Mexico in 1970, and subsequently kept a studio and residence there, living there intermittently until his death in 2012 in Venice, California.
In advance of the first-ever exhibition of Price’s large sculptures in 2014, Matthew Marks Gallery shared this video, including interview footage filmed in Taos in 2005, with Price talking about his work at his studio there, and referring to his early desires to create large sculptures.
