“My practice is a mixture of drawing and three-dimensional installation that also blurs the boundaries of gardening, science experiment, material experiment, sculpture, recycling, indoors and out.” —Hannah Chalew
Born in New Orleans, where she lives and works, Hannah Chalew had something of an artistic awakening after living through the devastation that hurricane Katrina had on her hometown. Chalew’s work explores the relationship between nature and culture, using recycled and repurposed materials, and sustainable studio practices.
The Joan Mitchell Center was opened in New Orleans in 2015, with artist residencies and community events, to complement the work of the Joan Mitchell Foundation (based in New York City). Chalew was an artist in residence in the fall of 2018, when she spoke with the Center about her work.
