“Art is a way that one comforts oneself. It’s a way that I find solace and balance and quiet in my life. And that it reassures me that I can manifest something physical outside of myself. that then I can look at. It’s like a ‘proof’ of myself, but it’s also something I can turn around and look at these different facets of my consciousness or something like that. Or it can still remain inexplicable, or something that just occurs to you to do and you do it. ” — Kiki Smith

‘Compass’ refers not only to a navigational instrument but also a drawing instrument; a linguistic crossover and a functional crossover that is neatly representative of this exhibition which presents some of the artist’s most recent works alongside previously unseen ones.
In this video, Smith talks about the role of art in her life and in the world, accompanied by a walkthrough of the exhibition in Continua’s remarkable space.
