COMMUNITY: Agnes Gund’s Art for Justice

The Getty

11.01.2018

“I thought, ‘I should do something about something that – to me – is so wrong about our system, and maybe this is something I could address.’” —Agnes Gund

In early 2017 a rumor popped up that Agnes Gund had sold her iconic Roy Lichtenstein painting Masterpiece (1962) for an amount in the heady territory of $100M. The truth was even more breathtaking: not only had the final price been closer to $160M – making it one of the highest prices ever for a painting – $100M of the proceeds was earmarked as seed money for Gund’s new Art for Justice Fund to combat mass incarceration. In September 2018, to recognize a lifetime commitment to philanthropy, Gund was awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal (along with Thelma Golden and Richard Serra). This tribute video from the Getty explores the power of art to change lives through the words of Lichtenstein and two formerly incarcerated artists Jesse Krimes and Russell Craig.
