As we celebrate Black History Month we are reminded of Pope.L’s installation Trinket at MoCA Los Angeles in 2015, which in today’s political climate takes on an all new resonance and urgency. Although not entirely surprising, coming from such a legendary, prophetic voice as Pope.L.
From MoCA:
On the occasion of William Pope.L: Trinket, the largest museum presentation of the Chicago-based artist’s work to date, Pope.L opens up and talks about the themes of discord, duration, and democracy that are animated by Trinket (2008/2015), the show’s title-work and centerpiece. “I like that objects in our culture—maybe because we have so many of them—take on qualities that maybe they don’t possess. And the flag has this similar animism about it. We bestow it this inner life. So I’m trying to take that seriously.”—William Pope.L For more on William Pope: Trinket, March 20–June 28, 2015, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, visit http://moca.org.
