“I had removed myself… I became interested in what I called ‘the necessary structure and the contingent event.’” —Alice Aycock
Galerie Thomas Schulte produced this remarkable video on the occasion of their show of early works by Alice Aycock (b. 1946, Pennsylvania) last fall. Here we see extracts from a 1977 interview with Aycock made by Kate Horsfeld as she talks about the development of her early work, alongside the documentation and recreation of a number of the same early work in the gallery, including the extraordinary Sand/Fans (1971).
Aycock was recently honored by Guild Hall at their 34th Academy of the Arts Achievement Awards, is included a recently opened group exhibition at the Bundesgartenschau in Heilbronn (through October 6, 2019), and will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover from June 8 through August 25, 2019. For Gallery Weekend Berlin this weekend (April 26-28, 2019), Shulte will again feature a major work by Aycock in the front windows of the gallery, this time a new work, Twister Grande (Tall) (2019).
Special thanks also to Video Data Bank, where you can find the entire 37-minute interview.
