“I was influenced by photographers especially. Robert Frank – I saw his book called The Americans… Robert Frank was from Switzerland, and he came to America and saw America like – he saw a new form of America that we didn’t see over here.” —Ed Ruscha
As part of its Louisiana On Paper series, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is presenting an impressive exhibition of works on paper by Ed Ruscha, entitled Very, culled from the UBS Art Collection. In this wide-ranging interview, Ruscha talks about the earliest inspirations for his interest in gas stations and flatness, coming from Oklahoma, and the effect of the city of Los Angeles on his work. He also discusses the artistic inspirations for reconsidering how we look at America.
