“It’s hard to talk about things being necessary with art. They always feel like they should be necessary. But then in times that are really dire, there’s always this question of Why? Or Why make art?” —Dana Schutz
Dana Schutz (b. 1975, Livonia, MI) is considered to be one of the most talented painters of her generation, with her inimitable visual iconography and bizarre –and sometimes controversial – subject matter. After a knock-out, widely praised show this past winter at New York’s Friedrich Petzel Gallery, Schutz is now featured in group shows at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. She is also currently featured in a unique group show at Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, Max Beckmann in Dialogue with Cecily Brown, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Dana Schutz (until July 13, 2019).
The Louisiana Channel visited Schutz in her Brooklyn studio this spring, where she talked about the fundamentals of her painting practice – from finding inspiration, to working with color, to the question of why even paint these days?
